Holy Spirit Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit

A simple guide to the traditional invocation asking the Holy Spirit to fill the faithful and kindle divine love.

Come, Holy Spirit is one of the Church's simplest and strongest prayers. Catholics return to it when they need light, courage, guidance, purity of heart, or renewed love for God.

The prayer

Traditional Prayer Text

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

O God, who didst instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us by the same Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

When to pray it

When Catholics Commonly Use It

  • During Pentecost and the days leading to it.
  • Before study, teaching, or important work.
  • Before decisions that require clarity and courage.
  • At the start of prayer when the heart feels distracted or dry.

How to use it

A Very Simple Practice

  • Pray the short invocation once, slowly.
  • Ask for one concrete grace: wisdom, courage, purity, patience, or peace.
  • Repeat a short line through the day, especially when you feel uncertain or weak.
