Lenten Prayer

Litany of Humility Guide

A guide to the searching prayer that asks Jesus for freedom from pride and the desire to be praised.

The Litany of Humility can be both beautiful and unsettling. Catholics often turn to it during Lent, before Confession, or when asking Christ for freedom from pride, comparison, resentment, and self-protection.

Why people pray it

What This Litany Is For

It is a prayer of surrender that asks Jesus to loosen the soul's attachment to status, praise, and comparison.

It is especially useful when you notice pride, resentment, envy, fear of humiliation, or a need to be seen well.

The goal is not self-hatred. The goal is freedom for love.

When to pray it

Especially Fitting Times

  • During Lent.
  • Before Confession.
  • When pride or comparison is disturbing your peace.
  • When you want to grow in hidden faithfulness rather than appearances.

Pastoral caution

Pray It Calmly, Not Harshly

If you struggle with anxiety or scrupulosity, pray the Litany of Humility gently. Let it lead to trust in Jesus, not self-rejection.

Choose one line at a time if the full prayer feels too heavy, and bring that line into simple conversation with Christ.
